The agreement, in plain words.

1. What these cover
These terms apply to the Meraky app, this website, and the backup subscription. Using any of them means you accept them. Meraky is operated by the maker of the app, reachable at hello@meraky.club.
2. The app is free
Logging books, reading sessions, notes, feelings, ratings, insights and both keepsake cards are free and carry no time limit. You do not need an account for any of it. We do not promise the app will be free of faults, but we do promise not to put a feature you already rely on behind a price.
3. Your account
An account is your email address. You are responsible for keeping access to that mailbox, because whoever can read it can sign in. Tell us at hello@meraky.club if you think somebody else has.
Accounts are created in the app. This website signs in an account you already have; it does not make new ones.
4. What a subscription buys
One thing: an off-device copy of your library, and the ability to bring it back. Every new account gets 30 days of it at no cost. After that it is $19 per year, renewing yearly until you cancel.
Prices are in US dollars and exclude any tax that applies where you live; the total is shown at checkout before you pay.
5. Refunds
If you subscribe and change your mind, write to us within 14 days of the payment and we will refund it in full. You do not have to give a reason.
After that window a subscription runs to the end of the period you paid for. You can cancel at any time and keep backup until that date; we do not refund part of a year, and we do not charge you again after you cancel. Nothing you have written is deleted when a subscription ends.
6. If a payment does not go through
Backup stops when the paid period runs out. The app carries on exactly as before — your library is on your phone and is not touched. Subscribe again and backup resumes.
7. What you put in
Your notes, ratings and reading are yours. You keep every right in them. We do not read them, analyse them, train anything on them or show them to anybody. The permission you give us is the narrow one it takes to run the service: to store the backup you asked us to store, and to hand it back to you.
A card you share is published by you, not by us. If you set a nickname it appears on the cards you share, so choose one you are happy for other people to see.
8. Fair use
Do not use Meraky to break the law, do not try to reach anybody else's account or data, and do not attack the service or work around its limits. We may suspend an account that does. We will tell you why, and if it was a mistake we will put it back.
9. Book information
Book details and cover images come from Open Library and belong to their respective rights holders. They are a good guess, not the truth — which is why the app asks you to confirm every book before it is added. We cannot promise they are accurate or complete.
10. Ending it
You can stop using Meraky whenever you like, and delete your account from your account page at any time. That removes the account and the backup the server holds; it does not touch the library on your phone.
We may end this agreement with 30 days' notice by email, and if we do we will refund the unused part of any subscription you have paid for.
11. No warranty, and the limit of our liability
Meraky is provided as it is. We work hard to keep backups safe, but no backup service can promise perfection, and you should not treat Meraky as the only copy of anything you cannot bear to lose. The library on your phone is the original; the backup is a second chance, not a guarantee.
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before it. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, or fraud, and nothing here takes away rights your local consumer law gives you.
12. Changes
If these terms change materially we will email you at least 30 days beforehand. Carrying on after that means you accept the new version; if you do not, cancel and we will refund the unused part.
13. Law
These terms are governed by the law of the country in which Meraky is operated, and its courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country you live in.
